RTX 4060 vs RTX 4070: which should you buy?

It comes down to one question: are you gaming at 1080p or 1440p? Get that right and the rest of this decision makes itself.

The 1080p vs 1440p line

The RTX 4060 is a 1080p card, and a very good one. The RTX 4070 is a 1440p card with headroom to spare. That's the cleanest way to think about it: pick the GPU that matches the monitor you're playing on. Buying a 4070 to run a 1080p screen leaves performance on the table; buying a 4060 for a 1440p high-refresh monitor means turning settings down sooner than you'd like.

What the frames actually look like

Numbers beat adjectives. Our Spark S1 pairs the RTX 4060 with a Core i5-13400F and 32GB of DDR5. At 1080p it turns in about 95 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 on High with DLSS, around 130 in Warzone, and it flies in esports — roughly 220 FPS in Fortnite and 300 in Valorant. That's a card built for high-refresh 1080p.

Step up to the RTX 4070 and you're running those same games at 1440p. Our Bolt P2 (Ryzen 9 5900X, RTX 4070) does about 110 FPS in Cyberpunk on High with DLSS and 180 in Fortnite — at the higher resolution. The Vortex P1 puts the 4070 next to a Ryzen 9 7950X3D and pushes about 115 FPS in Cyberpunk and 350 in Valorant at 1440p.

DLSS and VRAM

Both cards support DLSS, including Frame Generation, which lifts frame rates in supported titles — that's doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the Cyberpunk numbers above. The bigger practical gap is memory: the 4070 carries 12GB of VRAM versus the 4060's 8GB. At 1440p, with high-resolution textures, that extra headroom is what keeps the 4070 comfortable in newer games.

Price, and the honest recommendation

The 4060 build starts at $899; the 4070 builds run $1,299 and up. If you play on a 1080p monitor — especially fast-paced competitive games — the RTX 4060 in the Spark S1 is the smarter spend, full stop. If you're on (or moving to) a 1440p high-refresh display, or you also stream and multitask, the RTX 4070 in the Bolt P2 or Vortex P1 is worth the step up. Buy for the screen you actually play on, and you won't overpay in either direction.
